A man has been reported for careless driving after a three vehicle crash closed the A12.
The London bound carriageway was shut at junction 28 near the football stadium after three vehicles were involved in the collision.
Queues formed several miles back past junction 29 and across Colchester town centre.
Essex Police put a closure is in place and advised drivers to avoid the area.
The ambulance service has revealed one person injured in the crash has been taken to hospital.
A spokesman said: "I can confirm that EEAST responded to an emergency call shortly before 7am regarding an incident on the A12, Colchester.
"We sent an ambulance and a rapid response car to the scene.
"We transported one patient to Colchester General Hospital."

Essex Police have now confirmed the road has reopened.
A spokesman said: "A man has been reported for careless driving following a collision just before 6.25am this morning, Thursday 24 June."
