An Anglian Water spokesperson said: “Our teams are currently working to repair a burst water main on the Balkerne Hill footpath in Colchester.
"A section of the footpath is closed near the Hole in the Wall pub for the safety of local pedestrians.
"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank customers for their patience while we complete this repair.”
An Essex Highways spokesperson added: “We are aware of the issue and can confirm that there has been major damage to the footway that runs from Middleborough Roundabout up to and along Balkerne Hill, caused by a burst pipe.
"For safety reasons, it has now been closed.
"Anglian Water are responsible for the repairs and are currently on site assessing the damage prior to repairing and making good.”
