FOOTBALL fans across north Essex raised the roof as England beat arch rivals Germany to progress to the quarter finals of Euro2020.

Millions of fans across the country were glued to their TV screens last night for the historic clash while others watched from pubs.

Prince William, Kate Middleton and their eldest child Prince George were among the 45,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.

Across north Essex and further afield publicans welcomed the influx of drinkers wanting to watch the match in company.

It meant a much-welcomed shot in the arm after losing months of business due to lockdown.

Socially distanced fans shared the ups and downs of the match celebrating the two decisive goals from Raheem Sterling and England captain Harry Kane.

Lois Duncombe, manager of the Drapers in Earls Colne, said: “It’s been so great to welcome people back into the pub and seeing everyone enjoying themselves again.

“It’s been a really tough year for hospitality and for everyone’s wellbeing, so to have an ounce of normality back is more than welcome.

“The football seems to bring everyone together and it’s great for business too.

“We are really fortunate to have such a great outdoor space which people can enjoy.

“We’ve got some really loyal regulars and have been lucky to see them whenever we’ve been open, but everyone has not been so fortunate.

“Some venues have really struggled, but now there is life in pubs again.

“The future is looking brighter and long may England’s run continue so everyone can keep enjoying themselves.”

Fans erupted as England won, breaking out in the unofficial anthem of Football’s Coming Home.

Delighted fan Jack Townsend, 22, said: “It’s just so good to be back out feeling more normal, watching the football with my mates again after a long year.

“I don’t think anyone was expecting to beat the Germans, but it’s been a funny old year where just about everything has been unexpected.

“It feels like the nation comes together when we win and now Saturday will be another similar night.

“Everyone has needed this and it’s been such a good evening.”

Louis Allwood, 21, said: “I’m just glad it didn’t go to penalties.

“When they had that chance late on, I was so sure we were in trouble, but thankfully we held on. Who knows where we can go from here, but it certainly looks bright.

“It’s going to be another big night on Saturday for everyone to enjoy.”

Witham MP and Home Secretary Priti Patel was also behind the national team tweeting her support.

The victory will see England play in the quarter finals in Rome on Saturday.

And it put right the wrong suffered by England manager Gareth Southgate who’s missed penalty saw England’s Euro96 end in defeat to Germany.

It was the first time England had beaten Germany in a knock out game since 1966.
