This is where £18.2 Town Deal cash is set to be spent in Colchester

The We Are Colchester partnership, made up of Colchester Council, Essex County Council, business leaders and community groups, secured the cash through the Government’s Towns Fund.

The funding falls short of the bid for £25million and so a number of projects will be scaled back or dropped.

The planned £2.1million to create “liveable neighbourhoods” has been dropped, except one in Greenstead, while the £1.3million for improvements at St Botolph’s roundabout is no longer included.

Essex Highways is still working on a separate scheme for the area.

A spokesman said: “Initial feasibility works are continuing on the St Botolph’s project, this work is unaffected by the decision associated with the Town Deal funding allocation.”

“It was considered there would be further future funding opportunities which the St Botolph’s scheme would be able to take advantage of.”

“The s106 funding remains secure towards the project and we will continue to work closely with Colchester Borough Council on developing the scheme and securing funding through future bidding opportunities.”

Creating kerbless and green streets in the town centre will receive £290,000 rather than £1.5million.

The planned Youth Zone has been dropped, with £1.3million being given to existing provision in the town instead.

Most of the other projects will still receive the same or similar amounts of cash.

These include £1million for investigation works at Jumbo, £6million for a new community centre and homes in Greenstead, almost £3million for walking and cycling improvements in the town centre and between the university and Greenstead, and £900,000 for a digital work hub at the Wilson Marriage Centre.

Works at Balkerne Gate will receive £1million, Holy Trinity Church will be revamped with £500,000 and £1million will be invested in 5G.

A bike hire scheme for Greenstead will get £327,000 and work around Essex County Hospital will get £500,000.

Colchester Council’s cabinet will discuss the plan on Wednesday.

We Are Colchester now have until March next year to submit detail business cases for each project to the Government.

After that, funds will be released, and projects will be completed by 2026.

The We Are Colchester board submitted the list of projects to the Government on June 14.
