A COLCHESTER businessman who grew up in foster care and overcame homelessness is celebrating being nominated for a national award.
Christopher Clowes, co-founder of HC Media Group, has made the final of the Family Business Entrepreneur of the year competition.
Mr Clowes, 38, formed the firm three-years-ago with business partner Joe Hamilton, starting out in Queen Street in Colchester.
Late last year the digital marketing agency moved to new premises in Tiptree, doubling its workforce due to massive growth, and even opened a new agency in Africa.
Mr Clowes hopes his success can inspire others from disadvantaged backgrounds into the business world.
He said: "The one thing which got me out of the cycle of homelessness was the feeling of being in control.
"There are so many aspects of life that you cannot control, but business is one of them.
"This comes from having the right direction, the right education, and the right environment.
"The reason that we have grown so quickly is because our first aim is to offer free training to help any business in the world grow digitally.
"We also have an offering if they want us to do it for them, but first and foremost, giving free education is key.’’

Mr Clowes added: "The past 18 months have been challenging for all business owners, and for me personally, my business and my team.
"These awards are proof of everyone's hard work and dedication.
"Over the past year, HC Media Group has grown four-fold in size and we are set to double our workforce once again in the coming months due to demand.
"To think this time last year there were four of us in a small office in Colchester, and now, here we are with a team of 16 fun and passionate individuals across UK and Africa who have helped me reach my ultimate business goals.
"I cannot thank the team enough for their hard work and dedication.’’
Christopher, wants use his background as an inspiration to achieve success and hopes to change the perception of small business owners.
He added: "I am honoured to be up against such great entrepreneurs, and I wish everyone the best of luck in the final.
"It is a credit to my team for working so hard to get HC Media Group to where we are today."
