AN entrepreneur has taken another step in growing his rapidly expanding shoe and accessory restoration business by taking up a shop in Colchester High Street.
Single father Gareth Tansey set up Dr G’s Sneaker Laundry 18 months ago, turning his passion for repairing people’s used trainers - or kicks - into a business idea.
After the business outgrew his garden shed he moved into the garage, before earlier this month opening inside a unit in Colchester High Street, next to the entrance to Red Lion Yard.
The new shop, rebranded Dr G’s, or DGSL after a suggestion from singer Robbie Williams, offers restoration and repairs to trainers, shoes, handbags and boots - all of which will set you back much less than a new pair.
He can also offer bespoke and unique designs for people who want their kicks to stand out.
Mr Tansey, 40, said: “It got to the point where I needed more space again but I also wanted to take the business to another level.
“Hopefully I can promote to more people the idea of not being a throwaway society.”
The idea for the business grew out of Mr Tansey’s own dislike for going out with a dirty or worn-out pair of shoes.
He said: “I started doing it for family members and they were getting comments from people who wanted me to do their shoes.
“I was doing it part time whilst working full time as a planner for Network Rail.
“Then it got to the point where I had enough interest to pursue my passion full-time.”

His whirlwind journey in business has seen him work for and been mentioned on social media by the likes of comedian Leigh Francis, better known as Keith Lemon, and pop superstar Robbie Williams.
The new shop is another milestone for the business and has already been attracting interest from residents of all ages.
Mr Tansey said: “People are coming past and popping in to find out what it is about.
"They love the fact there is nothing else quite like this is Colchester or even nearby.”
Mr Tansey has received support including from business mentor Suki Dulai, managing director of Surya Foods, and partner Vaiva - as well as his young daughter Gabrielle, seven.
“She comes in the shop quite a lot and helps out,” Mr Tansey said.
“I really want to inspire her so she believes she can do anything when she grows up.”
He added: “I told her the shop would be hers when she’s older but she said she’d sell it and buy a Lamborghini.”
