MULTI-million pound plans for a long-awaited overhaul of a run-down shopping precinct have finally been approved.
Proposals were first revealed to transform the old Peacocks and Superdrug units at Priory Walk in Colchester town centre into apartments and up to six shops back in 2019.
However, the project has faced delays due to concerns over its financial viability.
Colchester Council's planning department has now rubber stamped the proposals subject to a number of conditions.
Plans will see six new smaller retail units created on the ground floor of the shopping centre.
They will range in size from 166sqm to 80sqm.
Above, 18 new flats will be created, most with private balconies.
No parking will be provided, however, cycle storage is part of the proposals.

The area is also home to The Gym Group Colchester, which will remain after the revamp.
