Attlee Gardens: Security boost on trouble-hit housing estate

Homes in Attlee Gardens have been plagued by bad behaviour, fires and drug dealing.

Earlier this year Essex Police helped secure a full closure order on one property due to offences of drugs misuse and violence.

Some residents were also forced to move out after a bad fire at a property in 2019.

The area has now undergone a number of improvements, including new security measures and redeveloping the outdoor space.

Tenants also have access to a range of support from an Essex Police crime prevention officer.

Funding from the Safer Colchester Partnership has helped to install a CCTV camera to boost security for residents.

The outside area has been redeveloped to create a greener environment with new trees and flower beds providing a more open space.

Better lighting has been installed to increase safety for residents walking through the area at night, and improved recycling facilities are now available.

Tenants say the new gardens and lighting have made a big difference.

Karen Loweman, director of operations at Colchester Borough Homes, said: “The safety and security of tenants and residents will always be one of our top priorities.

“By working with partner organisations such as Essex Police, we’re proud of the new measures put in place to support a safe and welcoming environment for residents in Attlee Gardens and the surrounding communities.”

Housing manager Jon Cowie said: “I am really proud of the turnaround at Attlee Gardens and to receive such positive feedback after meeting with local residents.

“The hard work to get the support of a local lettings plan and to improve the landscaping, which further deters antisocial behaviour, allows a sense of community to flourish and for residents to take pride in the area they live.”
