BILLY Cracknell has joined National League South side Concord Rangers on loan.
The 19-year-old defender, who made his professional debut for the U's last season as a substitute against Carlisle United, has linked up with the Beach Boys until January.
Cracknell signed his first professional contract with Colchester earlier in the summer.
And he will now attempt to gain vital playing experience with Concord, after making a loan switch away from the JobServe Community Stadium.
Colchester United's Director of Football Tony Humes told the U's website: "The move to Concord will be good for Billy, allowing him to gain consistent first team level higher than he has experienced before.
"It's the next step in his footballing career after signing a new deal with Colchester United, and I'm sure he will prove to be a useful addition in the National League South side."
It is not the first time that Cracknell has had loan experience away from Colchester.
The teenage defender, who was an unused substitute for the U's final game of last season at Tranmere Rovers, has also played on loan at Isthmian League division north side Maldon and Tiptree, under Wayne Brown.
