MUSICAL memories will be the order of the day at a special anniversary get-together.

The event is being planned to celebrate the 40th birthday of Colchester's Colne Valley Youth Orchestra.

The reunion is being held at Firstsite, from 2pm on Saturday, September 18.

All previous musicians, as well as current members, are invited.

Former Blur frontman Damon Albarn, a former member and now honorary president, has been invited to send a video message, along with other people the orchestra has worked with from abroad.

They range from a trip to the Netherlands in 1982 right up to this year's concert in Castle Park.

We also have a selection of pictures of the orchestra's special 30th anniversary concert in 2011.

The aim of the orchestra has always been to offer musical and social opportunities to youngsters aged seven to 18.

It is made up of the main orchestra and its junior partner, the Colne Valley Training Orchestra, and was established in 1981 by music teacher and composer Nigel Hildreth.

Mr Hildreth remains musical director.

Since its launch, hundreds of young musicians have had the chance to play and perform not just in and around north Essex, but in countries across Europe.

The orchestra has broadcast on national radio, performed at prestigious events and played a major role in encouraging youngsters to take up playing a instrument.

* The Colne Valley Youth Orchestra is keen to attract new members and is holding an open rehearsal on Sunday, September 12, at Colchester Sixth Form College.

Potential main orchestra members (grade four upwards) should come along at 12pm and those for the training orchestra at 2pm.
