A man is fighting for his life following an incident in Colchester town centre.
Police were called to reports of a fight shortly before 4.20am today (Saturday 28 August) and found the injured man on the pavement in St Botolph’s Street.
The injured man, who is believed to be aged in his 40s, had been knocked unconscious and suffered head injuries.
He was taken to hospital, where he remains in a life threatening condition.
A 20-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
He remains in custody for questioning.

A section of St Botolph’s Street is currently closed at the junction with Queen Street while police continue to carry out forensic examinations at the scene.
Traffic is being diverted down East Hill.
An Essex Police spokesman said: "From our enquiries so far, no weapons were seen during the assault and we continue to review CCTV footage and speak to witnesses.
"Anyone who was in the area and saw what happened is asked to speak to officers at the scene or contact us online at https://www.essex.police.uk."
