A police cordon remains in place in Colchester town centre this lunchtime following a serious incident in the early hours of the morning.
A man in his 40s was left with life threatening injuries following a fight in St Botolph's Street at around 4.20am.
Police said he had been knocked unconscious during the altercation after suffering a head injury.
He was rushed to hospital for treatment.
A man, aged 20, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
He remains in custody for questioning.
Detectives remain at the scene of the incident this afternoon and closed parts of Queen Street and St Botolph's Street throughout the morning.

It caused congestion in the town centre, with long queues forming on East Hill where traffic was being diverted.
The closure, which has since been lifted, meant there was no access to parking in Priory Street.
Police are appealing for anyone with information about today's incident to contact them on 101 and quite incident 232 of August 28.
Colchester town centre is expected to be busier than usual today due to Pride celebrations taking place at Firstsite and Colchester Arts Centre.
