A KIND-HEARTED support worker will be jumping from a plane to help raise money to revamp the garden at a residential home for adults with disabilities.

Shannon Flack, 23, from Colchester, is taking on a skydive to raise money for Livability Treetops in Highwoods.

She hopes to raise £1,000 to help create a sensory garden for the residents to enjoy.

Shannon, an enabling support worker at Treetops, will jump from the plane at Beccles airfield next month and will be watched by colleagues and some of the residents.

She decided to take on the skydive after seeing the devastating effect the Covid restrictions had on the residents at Treetops.

“I have seen the people I support, their families and friends struggle, from not being able see each other, hold hands, to only being able to go outside once a day which has had a major affect on everyone’s mental health making them feel isolated and lonely,” she said.

“My aim for my charity fundraiser is to make a whole new sensory garden for our residents to enjoy for the tough times we are currently in and to also enjoy after Covid-19.

“It is also a place where they can have family visits which the family will enjoy to be around.

“The garden will include sensory interactions and colours which help stimulate the brain and also help our residents feel calm and secure in where they are”

Livability Treetops is a high dependency residential care home providing 24-hour nursing and personal care for adults with disabilities.

Shannon’s manager Mandy Nixon says the team is right behind her fundraising efforts.

She added: “We have an outside area that is in need of urgent updating - due to the complex needs of the people we support we need it to be accessible for wheelchairs, plenty of shade and have a sensory feel.

“The lockdown has highlighted to us all the importance of a garden or green space for mental health and well-being.”
