AN anonymous donor has pledged £5,000 to help fund the cost of a statue for celebrating the sisters behind the famous nursery rhyme Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.
Colchester High Steward Sir Bob Russell has planning permission to create the new statue, of Jane and Ann Taylor, in Colchester High Street.
Jane and Ann, who lived in nearby West Stockwell Street, published many poems for children in the 1800s.
One written by Jane, 1806’s The Star, is now known throughout the world as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.
Sir Bob is raising cash to pay for the £75,000 statue through his famous walks and talks chronicling Colchester's history.
These fundraising efforts, combined with the £5,000 donation, means almost £14,000, or 20 per cent of the target, has been raised.
Sir Bob said he knew the identity of the generous donor, but they wished to stay anonymous.
"I have yet to make the official launch, but this is a good start," he said.
"It is a very generous, spontaneous donation.
"They read about the statue in the Gazette and wanted to support what I am hoping to achieve. I am most grateful.”

Donations can be sent to Sir Bob at 35 Catchpool Road, Colchester, CO1 1XN, with cheques payable to “Twinkle Star Fund”.
Sir Bob said: “I am hoping that individuals and organisations will make donations.
"Every contribution, however small, will help make the statue become a reality.
"I am keen the statue has community engagement and support.”
