A WEST Mersea beach hut has been shortlisted as finalist in a national beach hut competition.

Entrants from around the country were encouraged to complete a 200-word summary explaining why their property should win Ryan’s Beach Hut of the Year competition, as well as attach four pictures to showcase it.

The Albie hut, which is one of the five finalists, is owned by Julie Gillott, 58, of West Bergholt and her sister Karen Butler, 63, of Peldon. 

The West Mersea property was bought as a gift by their father and namesake and has been fully refurbished for the competition with external cladding, decking and a whole new interior.

Tracy Healey of Ryan’s, the insurance brokers company that launched the competition, said: “We loved reading Julie’s entry, an amazing transformation but also a wonderful way to give back to the local hospice.

“Whittling down the entries to just five has been a difficult task. The stories have made us laugh, cry, and reminisce about wonderful days spent at our own beach hut with family and friends.

“We have had stories about huts that have been in families for generations, others that have been lifelong dreams realised and those that offer a haven away from the stresses and strains of life.

“A huge thank you to everyone who has entered our Ryan’s Beach Hut of the Year competition, sharing their special stories with us this year.”

The winner of the Ryan’s Beach Hut of the Year 2021 will be selected from the five finalists by Millie’s Beach Hut owner Vicky Gunn and best-selling author Veronica Henry next Monday.

The first prize winner will scoop £300 plus one year’s free insurance, which is worth up to £500.

They will also get a luxury hamper, winner’s plaque and £150 donation to the their beach hut association.

Runners up will also be celebrated, with second prize of £200 and a third prize of £100 plus plaques.
