COLCHESTER’S MP Will Quince was filmed “having the time of my life” as the Government slashed benefits for almost six million people.

Alongside the Conservative welfare chief, Therese Coffey, Mr Quince belted out “I’ve had the time of my life” just hours before the universal credit uplift was axed.

The pair danced gleefully at a Tory conference karaoke party last night, which went on until the early hours of this morning.

Mr Quince sang the joyful 1987 power ballad, made famous in the film Dirty Dancing.

Gazette:

The £20-a-week uplift was brought in to ease financial devastation brought on by Covid, the benefit will be removed from payments landing between October 13 and November 12.

Until recently, the Colchester MP was the minister responsible for universal credit and is now the Minister for Children and Families at the Department for Education.

Labour called the timing of their karaoke performance in the early hours of Wednesday, as the uplift started to be removed from millions of people, “an insult and a disgrace”.

The SNP’s work and pensions spokesman David Linden said: “This is just shameful behaviour and shows how utterly out of touch Therese Coffey and the Tories are with the people they impose their policies on.

“It beggars belief that on the eve of their callous cut to universal credit, which will see six million households lose vital income, the Tories are guzzling champagne and singing karaoke without a care in the world.”
