MILITARY badges are in desperate need of some tender loving care, according to Colchester’s High Steward.
The badges have been a permanent fixtures on the retaining wall on the eastern side of Balkerne Hill, beneath the pedestrian bridge, since their installation in 1999.
Colchester’s High Steward and former Lib Dem MP Sir Bob Russell said he recalls the moment Douglas Morgan, who dreamed up the ambitious tribute, visited him with the idea.
Sir Bob said: “I recall a taxi driver coming to my office in 1999 to tell me of this idea, to commemorate past and present regiments who had been based at Colchester Garrison or who had an association with Colchester such as the Essex Regiment and Essex Yeomanry.

“He achieved his praiseworthy objective.
“Indeed, it is the only visible evidence which emerged to mark the millennium in 2000.
“Sadly, some of the 24 military badges are now flaking and need some tender loving care, if not replacing.”
Specially designed to celebrate the town’s links with the Garrison, the badges were unveiled during a ceremony attended by representatives of each regiment in December 1999.
Sir Bob said he had been contacted by two Colchester residents who have been trying for some time to get someone to take responsibility for their condition, but without success.
“Essex Highways say it is nothing to do with them, although they are responsible for all aspects of Balkerne Hill including keeping the grass cut and ensuring the bridge is safe of which the retaining wall with the badges is obviously of major importance,” added Sir Bob.
“The couple have variously been told the badges are the responsibility of the individual regiments, many of which – including the two with Essex in their title – no longer exist.
“There is also the Royal British Legion, but the legion exists to assist veterans - not to look after military heritage.”
“I am now hoping to be put in touch with Douglas Morgan and, from this, I can then try to find a way of restoring or replacing the badges which are deteriorating.”
