CALLS have been made for overgrown bushes near a busy roundabout to be cut back.
Colchester’s High Steward Sir Bob Russell has made a request to Essex County Council’s Highways department to take action on the otherwise “excellent” greenery.
Sir Bob said the overgrown bushes are a safety hazard for pedestrians waiting to cross from the western side of Crouch Street over Balkerne Hill, just before the Maldon Road roundabout.
“The greenery along the central area of Balkerne Hill is excellent, but it does need to be pruned near the pedestrian crossing,” he said.
“People waiting to cross from the central reservation cannot be seen by approaching motorists and pedestrians have their view blocked by the overgrown bushes.
“There is no need to remove the bushes. They just need to be carefully cut back to ensure there is clear vision for both drivers and pedestrians.”
Sir Bob recently criticised Essex County Council for removing all the creepers which were growing from the top of the retaining wall going down Balkerne Hill.
An Essex Highways spokesman said: “Removal of the overhanging vegetation on the retaining wall was necessary as a routine inspection of the wall will shortly be taking place.”
