VANDALS who covered town centre CCTV in paint have been branded “mindless” by Colchester Council.

Surveillance cameras in the underpass at St Botolph’s Circus were put out of action after delinquents sprayed them with paint.

It is understood the perpetrators were caught on film by the same cameras while undertaking the criminal act.

A Colchester Council spokesman confirmed six of its cameras were affected during the incident which occurred on two separate days.

Gazette:

He said: “Six cameras were covered in paint in mindless acts of vandalism on December 19 and December 22. These cameras have since been cleaned and no lasting damage has been caused to them.

“CCTV is an important part of our commitment to help keep people safe while enjoying everything our town has to offer and we do not condone any acts of vandalism against them.

“The incidents, together with images of those who carried out the vandalism, have been reported to the police.”

Gazette:

Colchester’s High Steward, Sir Bob Russell, has condemned those responsible, claiming it is a “reckless” act of anti-social behaviour.

“This behaviour is very serious, the CCTV is there for protecting law abiding residents and to focus attention on those who are up to no good,” said Sir Bob.

“This can range from anti-social behaviour to serious assaults and, therefore, whoever is responsible for this is being reckless as they are putting other people at risk of harm.

“It means any potential anti-social behaviour or worse will not be picked up, so people’s wellbeing is at risk.”

Sir Bob continued: “Colchester has a good reputation and the vast majority of people go about their daily business without causing trouble.

“The idea it isn’t a safe place is not something I recognise. It’s a lively town and sadly there are a minority who spoil it for the majority, but this happens everywhere.

“The police statistics indicate this is, in fact, a relatively safe place. I’m not saying it’s a utopia but we musn’t allow incidents to create problems.
