THOUSANDS of parents will have memories of Colchester's former maternity hospital.
The site in Lexden Road in Colchester was built in 1932 and was open for 65 years.
It was demolished in 1997 and services were moved to Colchester General Hospital.
An elegant row of Georgian-style town houses in Sovereign Crescent now stands on the site.
The last baby born at the hospital was to Karen and Michael Moon, of Wargrave Road, Clacton, and he had not yet been named when the Gazette went to press on January 6 1997.
Later that day, the hospital closed for good and senior midwife Celia Coulson said: "There are a lot of memories tied up for me here – a lot of good times."
