A PENSIONER has died following a serious collision on the A120... just three months after another fatal accident near the scene.

Officers from Essex Police were called to reports of an accident at the junction with Primrose Lane on Monday just before 1.47pm.

Police, paramedics and firefighters all attended after it was reported a Volvo V40 was in collision with a blue Transit van.

Despite the efforts of the ambulance service, the Volvo driver, a man in his 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family have been informed.

Road closures were in place for hours whilst emergency services worked and traffic was diverted along back roads.

Police have now appealed for any witnesses to the crash to contact them.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “We would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw the collision or who may have seen the vehicles prior to the collision.

“Witnesses and anyone with dash cam footage is asked to contact our Serious Collision Unit quoting incident 591 of 14 February.

A spokesman for East of England Ambulance Service said: “Two ambulances and a senior paramedic attended a road traffic collision at the junction of Harwich Road and Primrose Lane just after 2pm yesterday.

"Despite the best efforts of paramedics, an adult man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.” 

This is the latest accident to take place on the A120 in Ramsey.

Last December, Nicola Frost, 40, died following a collision involving her Suzuki Ignis and a Mercedes Sprinter van.

Mark Cole, who is chairman of the Colchester and District Driving Instructors’ Association, emailed Highways England back in 2019 to highlight the dangers of the junction which is set at a 90 degree angle to the A120.

Mr Cole said drivers have to brake and lose substantial speed in order to safely make the turn.

He has previously said: “Even more difficult is a right turn, which I understand locals avoid, preferring to drive through Ramsey and past Stour Woods for safety reasons.

“The difficulty is exacerbated by the fact that both national and international traffic thunders past this junction 24/7 and the lack of local road knowledge only adds to the risk.”
