OPPOSITION councillors have been left disappointed after proposed “significant” amendments to Colchester Council’s budget were refused.
Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party called for a freeze on the impending £4.95 council tax increase this year.
They also urged the council to establish an emergency fund to provide targeted help for Colchester residents in difficulty.
Another amendment suggested the establishment of a crisis reaction service which would connect residents to sources of support and help alleviate hardship.
But the amendment was refused by the Conservative-led council, which pressed on and rubber stamped its plans.

Lib Dem councillor David King, who represents Mile End, said: “This is a cost of living crisis for the most vulnerable and just about managing. A terrible time to increase council tax.
“Our changes could have made a real difference for some - between feeding the meter, or their family.
“This crucial budget amendment demonstrates we understand, and we care, and we will do all we can to help.”
Proposal for eco officer role
A PROPOSAL for an in-house environmental role to be created within Colchester Council was thrown out.
Mark Goacher, of Colchester Green Party, proposed the council hire an in-house ecology officer to provide expert environmental advice.
But Colchester Council voted against the amendment to its budget on Wednesday evening.
Mr Goacher said: “Sadly the Conservatives on Colchester Council have just rejected my proposal for an in-house ecology officer - voted it down.
“Shows how much they care about the ecological emergency.”
