CARS are set to be permanently banned from Colchester High Street under radical plans from County Hall.
It comes as Essex County Council has issued a public notice stating it is set to make the move permanent, with an objection period set to end on April 15.
But what will this mean for residents and motorists in the town?
We’ve answered all your questions for you.
When did the ban first start?
Cars were originally banned in June 2020 to increase space for pedestrians and enable social distancing as retailers reopened following the first national lockdown.
Who is still able to drive down High Street?
Buses, taxis, blue badge holders and motorbikes are still able to use the High Street, but general traffic isn’t.
Is there any time I CAN drive my car down High Street?
Yes, but not between 7am and 7pm.
But what about the roads leading to High Street?
Drivers will not be able to access High Street from junctions at Maidenburgh Street, East Stockwell Street, West Stockwell Street and George Street.
The rules will also remain from the Head Street junction to the Museum Street junction.
How can I have my say on the plans?
You can email your views to sgh.routes@essex.gov.uk by April 15.
