SILLY socks must be worn for world autism awareness day insists parkrun.

Colchester castle parkrun have a silly sock takeover tomorrow at Colchester castle park for their nineth year anniversary, hosted by Autism Anglia.

They want runners and walkers to take part wearing their silliest socks possible to show their support for charity.

Silly sock day is an event that is usually held every year in aid of autism awareness.

Emma Levett-Welham, the manager of outreach services at Autism Anglia, said: “I’m so excited, I have had the idea in my mind for a couple of years but with covid it wasn’t possible.

“I’ve worked for the charity for 15 years and I am very passionate for the support we do for children and families.

“Events like this makes people with autism feel valued that we’re raising awareness. It is an invisible condition where people can be in a situation where they’re judged.

“People with autism will be volunteering and they’re pleased to raise awareness of autism.”

Sue Cross, event co-director, said: “It’s such a brilliant event anyway and it’s great to raise awareness for autism, parkrun is really inclusive and you can walk if you want to.

“My nephew has autism, so it is special to me “We rely heavily on volunteers every week to marshal and help the event to go ahead and for it to still be going after 9 years says a lot about Colchester people.”

There will be a marquee and fundraising team at the parkrun tomorrow at Colchester castle park for anyone who would like to get involved.
