A STRIP club has been told it can resume its sexual entertainment acts after council bosses reinstated its licence.
Climax, in St Botolph’s Street, Colchester, had to halt its services after former owners Top Drawer Entertainment went into liquidation early last year, having racked up debts of £68,650, with assets of just £4,850.
It left at least ten dancers unemployed at the time as directors explained they chose to put the company into liquidation after being unable to pay a tax bill of £55,000.
The premises has since reopened as a bar permitted to sell alcohol, screen indoor sports and films, and allow dance, live music and recorded music performances indoors.
But it will now be able to see the return of legal eroticism as an application made by Club World Limited to renew the sexual entertainment venue licence was granted by Colchester Council.
Such an application is made when a new owner takes on the premises in order to legally operate the licensed activities from the venue.
While the venue has historically proven controversial among Colcestrians, the council’s business boss, Darius Laws, who champions the town centre, says he feels indifferent about its full reopening.
Mr Laws said: “I support freedom and for people to spend their own money as they wish.”
The new licence binds the club to ensure it has at least two door staff present at all times during opening hours, and all customers must be explained the rules for the venue before entry is permitted.
Those looking to enter must always be smartly dressed, with sportswear banned.
A strict drugs policy has also been pledged by the owners, with any customer found in possession of drugs, attempting to consume or sell them will be barred and the police called.
Furthermore, any performer or member of staff found to be in breach of the no drugs rule will have their employment terminated immediately, the club bosses say.
High quality CCTV will also be in place covering the whole venue day and night with the exception of the performers’ changing area.
