COLCHESTER boxer Tommy Jacobs says his upcoming mouth-watering contest with Billy Underwood is a 'long time coming'.

The 34-year-old undefeated professional is preparing to return to the ring next week, having had six successive fights cancelled, mainly due to Covid restrictions.

Jacobs is preparing to add to his professional win record when he boxes as part of Fight Town at the iconic York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday, April 22.

It will see the middleweight - nicknamed Sweet T - box for the first time under the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) since beating Kevin Macauley, last August.

Jacobs said: "My fight itself is being hailed as fight of the night before the show even gets underway, as you have myself at 2-0 and the promoter's golden boy Billy Underwood (4-0).

"Both of us have identical victories versus the same opponent in our last contests.

"However it is extremely rare for two undefeated prospects to be risking their “0”s at this stage of their career.

“I took this fight as soon as it came up, as I want to be as busy as possible and push myself as far as I can.

“This is a long time coming.

"Myself and my gym mate Ashley Sexton, who boxed each other on the first-ever Harwich Boxing Club home show in 1999, had a four-page spread in Boxing News about us finally boxing professional on a show together after a quarter of a century in the sport.

"But again due to Covid, it didn’t happen.

"Ashley is fighting for the IBF international title; there is also a Southern Area title up for grabs."

The show is being billed as the biggest “small hall show” ever by promoters Neilson Boxing and Warren Boxing management.

There is a host of 50/50 bouts on the undercard including Harley Benn, the son of boxing legend Nigel Benn.

The show has been picked by Box Nation TV as the first show to put live British boxing back on the channel for quite some time.

Gazette:

The channel, which was founded by promoter Frank Warren, is set to be used as a building platform for successful boxers to progress to the BT Sport shows he puts on under his promotion Queensbury.

Jacobs added: "The show will be live on Box Nation and I’ll be on TV at prime time but I need as many people there as possible taking the roof off the most iconic venue in British boxing.

"I’m in the away corner and have everything stacked against me so I need all the support I can get."

Tickets are available from Tommy himself on 07475 096532 or at Willies Gym on Whitehall Industrial Estate priced at £50 standard, £70 balcony or £100 ringside.
