JUBILEE fever will be coming to Colchester with modern twist this summer with a special virtual augmented reality trail.
Visitors and residents alike will be able to discover more about the town’s incredible history with the trial which launches next month.
Street Tag is a free, interactive app, which promotes physical activity and helps people learn more about their surroundings.
It turns physical activity into a game by converting walking, running and cycling into Street Tag points.
The Jubilee Trail will run from May 2 to June 26 and will take people on a journey to discover 15 locations across the borough, each with a link to royalty past and present.
App users will learn about the Royal connection at each location, through audio clips, photos and video clips from the past, bringing the area and its stories to life.
Users will collect 100 Street Tag points for every location that they interact with.
The aim is to collect as many tags as possible, for competitive placing in the local leader-board.
The Street Tag app was launched in Colchester, in March 2021 in partnership between Colchester Council and the Essex Local Delivery Pilot.
Seun Oshinaike, founder of Street Tag, said: “We are looking forward to celebrating the royal history with the Colchester community through the digital lens of the Street Tag app.
“With lots of fun and educational curated content for residents to experience.”
Tim Young, deputy mayor of Colchester, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to get outdoors, start having some fun, and learn something new about Colchester’s history and Royal connections.
“I’m expecting lots of people in Colchester to download the free app over the next few weeks and follow the trail.”
Downloading the app is completely free, find out more about Street Tag at www.colchester.gov.uk/street-tag.
A programme of Platinum Jubilee events has been planned across the borough, which will culminate in a national bank holiday weekend in June.
These include flags in High Street, a gun salute in Castle Park, community picnic, lighting of Castle Park Beacon, virtual museum displays and street parties.
