TRIBUTES have been paid to a legendary businessman and campaigner - described as “one of the most passionate advocates for Southend” – who has died.

Garry Lowen, 63, died on Saturday following a life-limiting battle with Motor Neurone Disease, which he was diagnosed with last April but vowed to fight until the end.

The committed charity worker, who was granted the Freedom of Southend earlier this year, owned the Gleneagles Guest House in Clifftown Parade, with his wife Penny, 61.

He had spent his entire life dedicating himself to his beloved Southend and supported and campaigned on behalf of an endless list of non-profit organisations in the city.

The stalwart, who was terminally ill, was also a member of the Southend Rotary Club and a long-standing supporter of the Southend Conservatives.

Since the news of his tragic death was announced on Saturday, tributes have poured in from every corner of the community, with many celebrating the top man Garry was.

Bosses at Leigh-on-Sea Town Council, who Garry often supported by regularly taking part in events arrange by the authority, sent condolences to his loved ones.

They said: “Garry was a great friend to Leigh Town Council being instrumental in organising and leading the parade at Leigh Lights on the night for many, many years.

“He was behind the scenes but a driver of so many community events across our city including Southend Carnival and the Remembrance parades.

“The council was proud to award him a Good for Leigh Award and we will miss him greatly - RIP Garry, our thoughts are with Penny, his family and friends.”

The Southend Rugby Club also issued a saddening statement on Garry’s tragic death
