A TEENAGER has been arrested after an incident at the University of Essex which saw several people injuried.
Essex Police were called to reports of a disturbance at the Colchester campus, in Wivenhoe Park, shortly after 6pm on Saturday.
Officers found six people had sustained non-serious injuries and the university's on-site security teams were dealing with the incident.
The force subsequently arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of GBH with intent before releasing him on bail until June 10.
University of Essex bosses have now reassured staff and students of their commitment to campus safety and praised those who responded to the incident.
A spokesman said: “We are very grateful for the speedy response of our security and campus safety team and support of Essex Police in resolving this incident safely.
“We’re offering support to those affected and helping Essex Police with their investigation.”
Mark Cory, Colchester councillor representing the Wivenhoe ward, who was previously a student at the University of Essex, said the campus remained a safe place.
He said: “I am saddened to hear that this has happened - the university has always been a safe place and it definitely was when I was there 15 years ago.
“I believe the university remains a safe space today but this, of course, is surprising and saddening in equal measure."
Essex Police is appealing for anyone with information which might aid their investigation to contact them as soon as possible.
A force spokesman said: “We need anyone who saw anything or has any footage to contact us.
“If you have any information you can submit a report online at essex.police.uk or use the Live Chat button to speak to an online operator between 7am-11pm.
“You can also call us on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Please quote incident 1088 of 14 May.”
