A PERFORMING arts group is preparing to finally stage its fundraising production after encountering numerous delays as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Colchester Pride Players will perform a rendition of Beautiful Thing, at the Headgate Theatre, in Chapel Street North, Colchester, between May 25 and May 28.
The story, originally written by Jonathan Harvey, is described as being “gentle and optimistic” and follows South London neighbours Ste and Jamie.
The teenagers, who are both being bullied, soon find solace in each other’s company and an awkward but joyous relationship quickly starts to blossom.
Despite being set in the 1990s the play, underscored by a Mama Cass soundtrack, succeeds displaying happiness at a time when there was an anti-LGBTQ+ message.
Jenna Saiz, who is co-directing the production, said: “We are in our third iteration of cast due to the pandemic and now it is finally happening and we are thrilled.
“We're really excited as we are picking this up from before the pandemic and are so thrilled we can actually put this on.
“All proceeds are going to the Colchester Pride charity to continue to create a great pride day event and host ancillary events throughout the year for the community.”
