COLCHESTER’S airborne gunners are set to mark the Queen’s milestone anniversary with the only way they know how – and residents are being invited to watch.
The 105mm Light Guns of 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, based Merville Barracks, will carry out a 43-gun salute in Lower Castle Park next Thursday.
The battery of three guns will fire at precisely noon to commemorate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee, which celebrates the 70 years she has spent on the throne.
Before the big moment, Colchester’s British Army Band will perform an uplifting and patriotic set of songs, as guests marvel at the military equipment on display.
After the salute, the musicians will move to Upper Castle Park where they will play as part of Colchester Council’s community picnic.
Eligible gunners with five years’ service will also be presented with special medals by the Queen’s representative in the county, Lord-Lieutenant of Essex Jennifer Tolhurst.
Battery commander Major Aden Philpott said: “It is a great honour for the battery to fire a royal salute in Colchester to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
“Our gunners are looking forward to the chance to be seen firing our guns in public on such a significant occasion.
“We will be practising hard to ensure our ceremonial drill is up to the same high standards as our operational skills.”
