Ever dreamed of working at Colchester Zoo?

Well now could be your chance as the attraction is looking to fill a number of vacancies.

The attraction is currently advertising for five jobs including everything from senior reptile keeper role to a handyperson.

Here is a rundown of what is currently on offer.

Senior reptile keeper

The "exciting position" would see the successful applicant join the keeper team working in the reptile section.

The successful applicant will be part of a team entrusted with the care of a range of reptile, amphibian, fish and invertebrate species including Komodo dragons.

It is a full time role where the successful candidate will carry out “husbandry duties and maintain high standards of welfare for the animal species in their care.”

The job advert says: “Alongside more senior members of staff, the job holder will be responsible for mentoring and allocating work duties to junior Unique Colchester Zoo stampede set to return - here's how you can enteremployed staff members; qualified keepers and apprentice keepers, and volunteers; student keepers and work experience students.”

Applicants should have the Diploma in the Management of Zoo Animals and Aquaria or an equivalent qualification and have a full valid driving licence.

The role involves a 40 hour week and will include weekend work.

The closing date for the role is June 24.

Commercial Services Team (Retail, Catering, Admissions, Play Area)

 

The zoo has opportunities for people who would like to work in retail, catering, admissions or children’s entertainment.

The advert said: “Successful applicants may be mainly based in one service area e.g., catering however at peak times we may ask you to assist across all areas of the service as business needs demand.”

Applicants are asked to be “be flexible and adaptable” and “be able to engage and communicate clearly and confidently with guests.”

The closing date for the roles is June 10.

Painter

The zoo has a vacancy for a painter in its maintenance team.

The advert says: “As a painter at Colchester Zoo your job will be carrying out the application of paint, varnish and other finishes and special coatings to the walls, ceilings and other surfaces of buildings and structures.

“A painter at Colchester Zoo will have both a practical and a decorative purpose, as maintaining surfaces not only protects them from weather damage / rust etc but also ensures our zoo always look attractive to visitors and colleagues.

“The right person for this job must enjoy working inside and outside in all weather conditions.”

The role is across five days working a Monday to Friday week.

Handyperson

The zoo has a vacancy for a handyperson in its maintenance team.

The job advert said: “As a handyperson at Colchester Zoo your job will be carrying out simple repairs or general maintenance on buildings. Those repairs will be varied so having a broad range of craftsmanship and practical skills will prove useful.

“The right person for this job must enjoy working inside and outside in all weather conditions. The work involves a lot of walking, lifting and bending and you will often have to wear waterproof and protective clothing. No two days are the same at Colchester Zoo.”

The role is across five days working a Monday to Friday week.

Guest Services Assistant

The job advert says: “As our visitors’ first port of call when entering the Zoo, you will welcome guests into our admission foyer, operate our ticketing office and assist with queue management. We also help customers with booking school/group visits and the various animal experience products on offer, as well as selling our Zoo passes, PLUS any general enquiries our visitors may have.

“The right person for this job must be well organized with excellent people skills, will have tremendous patience when dealing with guests and accommodate their needs with enthusiasm and poise including being able to diffuse conflict or tension when dealing with customer comments.”

The full time role is a five day week on a seven day rota and will require working at weekends and school holidays.
