Colchester's famous medieval fayre is to return this weekend as people are given the chance to experience the relics of the town’s ancient past.

Extra celebrations are in place over the two days, with the fayre coinciding with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

As such, a re-enactment of the royal court of Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry VIII is to be a key part of the proceedings, with authentic medieval music to be played by Colchester bands to entertain fairgoers.

The event, which has been part of Colchester’s cultural scene for over two decades, will also include stalls showing off medieval crafts and delicacies, which are still of great interest to residents in the town and beyond.

The national championships of nine men’s morris, a strategy board game which was devised during the years of the Roman Empire, will also be held over the weekend.

Gates open from 10.30am at Lower Castle Park both tomorrow and Sunday, with the fayre lasting until 5pm.

Tickets cost £10 per day for an adult, or £18 for both days.

Children are charged £4 each day, or £7 for a weekend pass, with family passes costing £22.

All visitors will receive a 25 per cent discount on tickets to visit the Castle Museum.
