THE community spirit shown in the wake of a devastating fire which left families homeless “is not a surprise” because “Harwich is known for amazing generosity.”

The Hanover Inn, in Church Street, went up in flames on Tuesday morning before the fire spread to historic cottages as stunned residents looked on in horror.

After fighting the fire for roughly six hours, the blaze was eventually extinguished by fire crews from across Essex, but the buildings impacted were destroyed.

As a result of the horrifying incident, which left 177 properties without power for hours on end, two families have been made homeless.

The Harwich community, however, has since rallied round with a view of helping anyone affected by the fire by offering them spare rooms and hot food.

Businesses in the area, such as hotels and cafes, have also played their part in ensuring those impacted do not go without during their time of need.

Jay Thomas, 19, who has lived in Harwich his entire life, apart from three years in Clacton, said: “It’s amazing to see the community come together in a time like this.

“But it is not a surprise because Harwich is known for its amazing generosity and all-round community spirit.

“People were offering spare rooms for those affected, along with hotels and businesses helping where they can - it’s amazing to see, but not a surprise at all.”

Jay, in collaboration with many other residents in the area looking to do good in the wake of such a tragedy, has now launched a campaign to raise £2,000.

He added: “I’m really into my history and community so when I heard this had happened I was shocked because of the history side.

“But knowing two families have lost their homes and six people have lost their jobs is really upsetting, so I have put this together to help those affected.

“The money fundraised will be used within the immediate future to help get those impacted back on their feet.

“If we manage to raise enough we would use the money to help with the rebuilding costs too. Let’s get together and raise as much as possible.”
