COLCHESTER residents are some of the luckiest in the country, it has been revealed.

The newly-crowned city has been named as the tenth luckiest place in England, according to research carried out by online games website SolitaireBliss.

The results are based on the number of people from Colchester who have scooped winnings on the Postcode Lottery since January 2011.

The data, supplied by Lottery, shows 294 residents have won on the popular lucky dip, which equates to roughly 72 residents per 100,000 in the area.

As a result, Colchester has a win rate 34 per cent higher than the national average, although the likes of Exeter and Telford are said to be luckier places to live.

A spokesman for SolitaireBliss said: “Postcodelottery.co.uk claims over two-thirds of Great Britain’s postcodes are playing, with winners announced every day.

“So why do some areas have greater luck than others? Some reasons for this can be due to the number of players registered for each postcode.

“So, nine entries for one postcode will have greater chances of winning the Postcode Millions prize than a single person entering their postcode alone.”
