IN recent years, Colchester has been lucky enough to host some of the most established names in pop music, catering for gig-goers both young and old.
Everyone from superstar Olly Murs and the legendary Tom Jones to Simple Minds, Tears For Fears, Steps and boyband Blue have graced the Castle Park stage.
Elton John and Little Mix, on the other hand, have performed at Colchester United’s JobServe Community Stadium to packed crowds.
And by the time this summer is over, Westlife, Simply Red, Louisa Johnson, and Michael Ball and Alfie Boe will have also played in our newly-crowned city.
Performing for the masses in Colchester has now become a desirable a prospect and a must-visit destination for artists regardless of how big a name they are.
But what other bands or musicians would our residents like to see events bosses in the city coax into the area?
Nicci Whelan said: “Gary Numan - he’s played at Charter Hall before but now needs to play in Castle Park or the football stadium because he’s got a massive following.
“I saw I’m back in May and he was amazing.”
Lisa Doran, however, would like to see more guitar-driven bands heading to Colchester to rock-out.
She said: “Foo Fighters, Sam Fender, Red Hot Chill Peppers, Coldplay, Snow Patrol, any of these and I will be very happy.”
Ed Sheeran, P!nk, Billy Joel, the Rolling Stones, Beyoncé, Bon Jovi, Guns ‘N’ Roses, Metallica, and even MP Will Quince have also proved popular suggestions.
But some gig-goers would like to see more homegrown and upcoming artists given a chance to prove themselves on the bigger stages.
Rich Young said: “The return of Colchester Free Festival would be pretty amazing – local musicians showcasing their talents for everyone.
“Big name acts are great, but we have our very own amazing music and arts community so let’s celebrate it.”
