Meerkat statues appear across Colchester and Wivenhoe

Cute meerkat statues appeared overnight dotted across the borough outside various shops and roads.

And while the appearance of the statues is bringing a smile to people's faces, no-one has yet claimed responsibility for them.

In Wivenhoe, one figure was spotted outside the Broad Lane Sports Ground, while another could be seen by the doors of award-winning chippy Henley’s.

And in Colchester, a miniature figure lies on Hythe Bridge and outside salon All Tanned Up, in Drury Road.

Despite his business having a statue donning a white chef’s outfit by its doors, Henley’s owner David Henley said he was unaware of what was going on.

Intrigued Wivenhoe councillor Mark Cory also said he did not know where the statues came from.

He added:  “I know nothing, to be honest, it sounds bizarre and I’d love to know more."

Whispers began to emerge of the possibility of the mysterious appearances being linked to the weekend’s Wivenhoe Regatta but organiser Paul Hailes denied any responsibility.

He said: “I haven’t heard of it but I could certainly look into it. I’d be interested to hear what’s going on."

Wivenhoe town councillor Shaun Boughton claimed he had spotted multiple meerkats while out on his travels and said they had brought a smile to his face.

He said: “I first noticed one as I was coming out of Wivenhoe and a meerkat version of Freddie Mercury was just sitting there staring at me.

“I went into Highwoods and saw another one, and then All Tanned Up said they’d been left one.

“I thought it was comical seeing these bizarre items but someone is obviously out there trying to spread some meerkat love. It has certainly made me scan my eyes around as I drive.

“I think it’s an enjoyable thing for the community as it gives people a bit of an uplift. If it makes people smile and lifts the spirits then an act like this is always going to be welcomed.”
