SUPERMARKET bosses say there is no update on plans for a new shop in a large empty commercial unit in Colchester.
Sainsbury’s was first granted planning permission to open a store inside the former B&Q site, in Lightship Way, Hythe, back in 2016.
The groceries giant was set to take over the lease of the unit in 2019, however, the DIY firm then signed a two-year extension.
B&Q moved to its new home at Stane Retail Park in October leaving the building empty.
Last year Sainsbury’s said it still hoped to invest in the site.
Speaking in October a spokesman for Sainsbury’s said: “Sainsbury’s is still hoping to invest in the site at Lightship Way. These plans do not include a proposal for housing.”
In August last year the brand had said they hoped to be able to update residents on the long-awaited new store very soon.
But nine months on there is yet to be any news on the plans.
When asked by the Gazette a spokesman said there was “no current update” but the firm would “keep the local community updated.”
It comes as it was confirmed Sainsbury’s would close its Priory Walk shop for three months for major upgrades.
The shop will be closed from Saturday, August 13 until November at the earliest with a spokesman saying they hoped the store would reopen in time for people to do their Christmas shopping.
The two other branches of Sainsbury’s in Colchester, in Layer Road and Stanway, are to remain open as normal.
A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “Our Colchester supermarket will temporarily close from August 13 for essential upgrades to the store’s refrigeration, ventilation and heating systems.
“The store will be more energy efficient as a result, supporting our sustainability plans and ambitions.
“We will be working hard to complete the upgrades as quickly as possible and are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”
