A CAMPAIGN group has reacted to the news which will see plans for cycle lanes reviewed by County Hall.
Essex County Council’s active travel plan had seen plans drawn up for two major cycle routes in Colchester, one of which was an east to west route running from East Hill to Spring Lane.
The plans would have meant a significant reduction in the number of parking spaces in Crouch Street, causing uproar amongst retailers who argued their businesses were going to lose swathes of customers as a result.
But Colchester Cycling Campaign (CCC) has responded to Essex County Council’s decision to review the plans in a recent online post by arguing businesses on other areas of the UK saw trade pick up as a result of more cycle lanes and fewer cars.
The post read: “CCC empathises with those traders who are protesting against the scheme – everyone fears change, especially if livelihoods depend on it.
“However, not doing anything can be equally dangerous.
“It is important to remember that there is a 617 space multi-storey car park within 150m of Crouch Street.
“CCC commits to working with the council and other stakeholders as part of this process.”
