FIREFIGHTERS rushed to tackle a blaze at a former army gym after it caught alight in Colchester.
Plumes of smoke could be seen in the Ypres Road and Circular Road South area of the city this afternoon as the flames took hold.
The Gazette understands the fire started after solar panels on the historic ex-military building’s roof overheated due to the hot weather.
This has since been confirmed by the fire service.
The Victorian listed building which dates back to 1860 is now owned by Colchester Council and is home to the C3 Church.
The fire was extinguished by 1.10pm, the fire service has confirmed.

Colchester High Steward Sir Bob Russell witnessed the incident unfolding while he was in the area and said he could smell burning as three fire appliances dealt with the situation.
“I understand no water got into the building because the new roof they put in after a previous fire managed to prevent any water penetration,” said the former MP.
“Congratulations to the fire service for their prompt attention in stopping what could have been a very serious second fire to this building.
“It now looks as if they’ve got it under control and there is only superficial damage, of course if there is further damage then that would be awful.”
More as we get it.
