AN invasion of characters came to the centre of the city for a fundraising event.

Invasion Colchester is held to raise money for St Helena Hospice, Ipswich Hospitals Charity and Mid and North Essex Mind.

Many members of the public and cosplay community were crowded in the city to celebrate.

Although the amount raised from the event on Saturday is not yet known, previous events have raised more than £60,000.

Pictures show the many characters who joined in the event and members of the public who were well entertained by the range of costumes.

The event was founded by Simon Leonard after his life was saved after being diagnosed with swine flu in 2011.

His family were told that there was nothing else that could be done for him and to expect the worst.

The treatment for his condition was Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).

After pulling through, he started the event to raise money after feeling appreciative of the care he received that saved his life.

The event has grown since then to continue raising money for multiple charities.

A spokesperson for Colchester Invasion said: “We just want to take a moment to say THANK YOU.
