TRAFFIC signals at the junction of a busy city centre street are to be replaced during six weeks of works.
The lights at the St Botolphs Street and Osborne Street junction in Colchester have been deemed “ageing” by Essex Highways.
The project, which will commence from October 3, will see a number of overnight road closures while workers get spades in the ground between 8pm and 5am on weekdays.
A letter distributed by the road bosses reads: “We need to replace the signals before they become unreliable and fail to work properly.”
“[We] will be installing new extra low voltage equipment which will reduce our carbon footprint.”
Activities undertaken during the six-week works will include replacing or renewing underground cable ducts in the carriageway and footways, as well as replacing above-ground equipment.
Road closure dates are still being finalised and will be advertised in due course, Highways has said.
“We appreciate that these works may cause temporary noise and inconvenience to local residents for which we would like to apologise,” the authority added.
“Please note dates may be subject to change if the works are affected by poor weather or if unforeseen issues arise.”
