COMPARED to the petrol prices we listed in our August run-down, the cost of fuel for our motors is still seeing a steady – and welcome – fall.
Though prices of more than 160p per litre are still quite pricey compared to historical levels, things are still better than they were in June, when the cheapest fuel to be found in Colchester was 189.9p per litre.
And in September last year, there were queues outside petrol stations across Essex and much of southern England when a shortage of delivery drivers saw people panic buy fuel.
Set against the backdrop of June's prices and the events we saw last year, average prices of around 165p per litre for petrol don’t seem quite as bad, but there are still forecourts which might be charging you more than you ought to be paying.
Here are some of the cheapest petrol stations in Colchester, with the most affordable at the top, and the priciest at the bottom of the list.
1st – Asda (Turner Road), 162.7p per litre
At 5p less expensive than the cheapest petrol station in Colchester last month, 40 litres of petrol here costs £65.08.
2nd – BP (Mersea Road), 162.9p per litre
Only fractionally more expensive, 40 litres of petrol here costs £65.16.
3rd – Texaco (Mersea Road), 164.9p per litre
The American oil giant, which has two petrol stations in Colchester, will cost you £65.96 for 40 litres of fuel.
4th – Tesco (Hythe and Highwoods) and Sainsbury’s, 165.9p per litre
Both Tesco and Sainsbury’s are tied for fourth place – convenient given their petrol stations are all quite far apart. 40 litres at any of these stations costs £66.36.
6th – Co-Op (Peartree Road), 166.9p per litre
Coming in at the more expensive end of the scale, the Co-Op in Peartree Road sells 40 litres of petrol for £66.76.
7th – Esso (Bergholt Road), 167.9p per litre
One of Colchester’s less affordable petrol stations is Esso’s in Bergholt Road, where 40 litres costs £67.16.
8th – BP (Ipswich Road), 169.9p per litre
Though cheaper than some of the service stations nearby, the BP in Ipswich Road is still one of the priciest in Colchester itself. £67.96 is the overall cost for 40 litres of fuel here.
