THE British National Party has pledged to put more candidates up, after its first unsuccessful electoral outing in north Essex.

The far right movement's Patrick Sullivan was beaten into fourth place after standing for election to Colchester Council, but at 131 votes, polled more than the Labour and Green candidates in High Woods.

Regional organiser Eddie Butler said Mr Sullivan "did well" and he would be "the first of many candidates" in north Essex.

A message posted on the Gazette's website on Friday said the party would look to field candidates in St Andrew's and St Anne's wards next.

Mr Butler said: "We fully expect to have more candidates in Colchester and Tendring at the next elections, and I'm sure we will make a breakthrough soon."

The BNP claims to have "hundreds of members" in its north-east Essex unit.

"Our unit has only been established for six months and is getting some of our best recruitment figures," he said.

"Colchester and Clacton are full of people who have moved out of east London to get away from the problems there, and are ripe for our message."
