AN old water mill will work as it was meant to for the first time in 53 years.
Alderford Mill, Sible Hedingham, will open for National Mills Weekend, where the public can see the wheels and shafts turning properly.
The mill, which was mentioned in the Domesday book in 1086, is being restored by Essex County Council.
A crucial piece of the puzzle was added when a one-ton solid oak shaft was delivered to the site in February.
Now the waterwheel can turn the shaft, which drives a pit wheel and, in turn, a wallower which links to the millstones.
Mills officer Geoff Wood said it was "fantastic" to see it work.
"Everything is working brilliantly.," he said.
"We are quite delighted with the result. The thing is, it won't need replacing for another 150 years."
The weatherproofing and external work at the Alderford Street mill was started several years ago, but the internal work has been taking place for 31/2 years.
It will be open from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday May 11, and is free to see.
Other mills which are opening for the day include Bocking windmill, from 10am-5pm, Finchingfield from 2pm-5pm, Aythorpe Roding post mill from 2pm-5pm and Thaxted windmill from 2pm-5pm or log on to the website at www.tinyurl.com/5tsx6c for times and contact details.
Mr Wood is also keen to hear from volunteers who would like to man the mill on open days. Call 07887 662177.
