Drunks who have lost their shoes while partying in Colchester are to be given free flip-flops.

Colchester street pastors patrol the streets every Friday, offering help and support to people who have had too much to drink.

They have been given about £200 worth of beach shoes and bottles of water by staff at Asda, in Turner Rise.

A recent report showed the number of binge-drinking young women is increasing, with drunk and disorderly arrests doubling in the past five years.

The Gazette spent a night on Colchester's streets to witness the scale of the drunkeness.

Town chaplain, the Rev Alison Finch, said the welcome donation would help girls who had either taken their shoes off, or broken their shoes, to avoid broken glass; the water would tackle dehydration in the summer months.

A second group of street pastors are in training to volunteer on Saturday nights, and they are expected to start next month.
