A man was repeatedly punched, kicked and stamped on outside a Clacton nightclub.
The 42-year-old suffered extensive facial injuries after he was attacked by a group of between six and ten men outside Rumours in Rosemary Road.
Police were contacted by the ambulance service on Sunday at about 1am. Police have only just released details.
The victim had been taken to Colchester General Hospital when officers arrived at the scene. He is now recovering at home.
Detectives say the man, who had been enjoying an evening out with friends and family, had previously been inside the club but left when a fight developed on a stairwell.
He left the venue but was accosted by the gang.
The assailants are described as black and in their late teens or early 20s.
