Youngsters - and the not-so-young - could be set to benefit from the biggest investment in play areas in Tendring for more than 15 years.

Campaigners are bidding for £288,000, as part of a project to build children's play areas across the district.

Terry Allen, mayor of Frinton and Walton Town Council, added: "I would call on the council to provide facilities for other age groups, such as the over 50s, who can get exercise and enjoyment from them.

"We need to improve facilities for both the young and the old."

Frinton and Walton Town Council is set to discuss plans for play facilities for the elderly, which are designed to keep older people active, at a forthcoming meeting.

Pierre Oxley, Tendring Council's portfolio holder for leisure, said he hopes new play areas could be built in rural areas of the district, such as Frating, as well as in Dovercourt and Harwich.

He also hopes existing council-run facilities across the district can be refurbished.

"This will be the biggest investment into play areas for more than 16 years," he said.

Clacton's Eastcliff play area is soon to be completed and £100,000 works are also due to start at the town's Vista Road play area.
