A drunk came back from a night out and punched his girlfriend because he didn't think she loved him any more.
David Czapla, 28, started hitting a wardrobe, but then turned on victim Kirsty Humphries, a court heard.
Philip Pearson, prosecuting, said Czapla - also known as Bramble - had been "very drunk" after a night out with his brother.
He claimed Miss Humphries "didn't love him anymore", Colchester Magistrates' Court heard. The couple had been together for three or four months.
"He began punching the wardrobe, hitting it very hard," said Mr Pearson.
"The wardrobe began to topple. She grabbed hold of it to stop it falling, and at that point she was assaulted."
