The winners of Colchester's fifth Battle of the Bands were cheered to the rafters, and beyond.

On The Roof took the honours at the event, held at the Arts Centre on Saturday, in what was their first gig.

The band's Xavier Winton said they were "really happy" and hoped to have taken their "first step to the big time".

"We've only been together for six months, and to win at our first gig was totally unexpected - hopefully it's a good omen for the future!" he said.

The four-piece all attend Colchester Institute's music course, and Xavier described the influences on their sound as "a random lot of everything".

Organiser Abby Cheverst said On the Roof's "very exciting fusion of jazz and funk" earned them the title against strong competition.

Coda Red finished second, with Collision Theory named third among the eight finalists.

"There was a lot of talent and high-quality musicianship on show," Abby said.

"On The Roof sounded very different from the others and had a great stage presence.

"They didn't bring a huge following with them, like some of the more established groups, but the audience really warmed to them."
